Growing Herbs for a First-Aid Kit

Herbs are commonly used in many of the medicines you have in your medicine cabinet. Just think how much money you could save by planting your own healing herb plants. By using herb plants from my garden to stock my medicine cabinet, I have saved a lot of money.

Do you have any of these ailments? Try herb plants!

  • Coriander, chervil and thyme all help fantastic for aching joints. Lavender, marjoram, lovage, peppermint and oregano can be used as an antibacterial.
  • Do you have bad breath? Parsley, mint, anise and sweet cicely can help everyone breathe easier.
  • Constipation is serious. Help get the kinks out with fennel or dandelion.
  • It is amazing how many herb plants will help with flatulence, including peppermint, summer savory, lemon balm, ginger, caraway, coriander, beebalm and lovage.
  • There is not much more soothing to your frazzled nerves than a warm cup of chamomile tea at the end of the day. Some other herbs that I find soothing are goldenrod, lavender, dill and lemon balm.
  • There is no better cure for a hangover than thyme. It works better than the raw egg/tomato juice concoction some people might tell you to drink.
  • Do you have a bad case of hiccups that won’t go away? Give dill a try It will be fabulous, and if you like dill, it can be a tasty cure.
  • To treat your insect stings, even mosquito bites, try aloe, goldenrod, hens-and-chicks and summer savory.
  • Lying awake all night? Your best bet for some shut eye is chamomile or dill, but any of the herb plants that calm your nerves can help.
  • If you suffer from seasonal allergies or nasal congestion, sage, horseradish and violet are good options. The horseradish will clear your nasal passages quickly.
  • Peppermint is great for indigestion and stomachache, but dill, lovage and fennel are also helpful.

Among all these remedies you might think that herbs are like snake oil. You don’t believe me? Try it for yourself!

  • Aloe Vera: I have two different aloe vera herbs that are constantly suffering from me breaking off pieces to treat burns (including sunburn) and mosquito bites. Be mindful not to over-water your aloe vera plant. It is a succulent and doesn’t need much water or any other creature comforts. Just be sure that it gets plenty of light and that its well-drained sod keeps it firmly rooted in the container or garden bed.
  • Chamomile: You may already be familiar with chamomile because it is well-known as a healing herb that will assist with both mental and physical maladies. Chamomile [has|comes in] [2|two] [varieties|types|kinds] (German and true or Roman chamomile), and if you allow them, both of them can cultivate themselves next season in a process called self-sowing.
  • Horseradish: If you need to clean out your sinuses, just take a whiff of horseradish. As a member of the mustard family, horseradish has a peppery flavor that doesn’t attract horses at all. Although the leaves can grow to 2 feet long, it is the root that is essential for the herb gardener.

Good luck with your herb gardening. Be sure to let me know how your herb garden grows.
