How to Attract Wild Birds to Your Garden
There are lots of different ways to attract birds to your garden. The best way is to provide them with a safe place to eat and the food they love. Garden bird feeders are the best way of providing food for them. They are especially helpful in the winter months when natural food for the birds is scarce.
To attract different species set up feeding stations with their favorite food. An example of a speciality bird feeder is a thistle bird feeder that holds the seeds that finches love. Spillage can be prevented by using tube feeders which also keep the seeds dry and mold free. Watch the birds feed from the comfort of you home with a window bird feeder.
You can buy specially designed feeders for goldfinches, woodpeckers and hummingbirds. Put them in a safe place somewhere close to your bird house. Mold can grow on damp food so check daily that the food is dry. Inspect the area around the bird feeder daily for spilled food which will attract unwanted visitors such as ants and wasps.
Birds benefit most from feeding during the winter but food can be scarce in other seasons too. Put food out all through the year to help the birds when shortages occur. Put out suitable food for fledglings during the breeding season as they can be severly affected by food shortages.
Water can be provided in bird baths and water pans for bathing and drinking. They will love a safe place to bathe their feathers and preen. You should provide water in containers at different levels for different species. Place containers shallowly filled with water in a quiet place away from bird feeders as birds do not like noise when they are bathing. Birds will be attracted by the sounds of water running. Water drippers are great for attracting birds and they also deter mosquitoes from breeding in the water.
A natural environment in a part of the garden will increase the birds sense of security. Leaving an area to grow with wild flowers and plants can provide a very attractive area for them.
